Five officers fired their rifles during the fatal shooting incident that killed Isak Aden

S.PAUL –The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the officers who discharged their weapons during a fatal officer involved shooting incident that occurred in Eagan on July 2. Five officers fired their rifles. All are on standard administrative leave.
- Officer Anthony Kiehl, Bloomington Police Department, six years in law enforcement.
- Officer Daniel Nelson, Bloomington Police Department, 10 years in law enforcement.
- Officer Jacob Peterson, Eagan Police Department, 10 years in law enforcement.
- Officer Matt Ryan, Bloomington Police Department, 11 years in law enforcement.
- Officer Adam Stier (steer), Bloomington Police Department, 12 years in law enforcement.
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner identified the deceased subject as Isak Abdirahman Aden, 23, of Columbia Heights. Mr. Aden died of multiple gunshot wounds.
According to the preliminary investigation, Eagan police officers responded to a 911 call on Tues., July 2, shortly after 6 p.m. The caller reported a man pointed a gun at her and threatened her in the area of Highway 13 and Burgundy Drive in Eagan.
Prior to officers arriving, the man now identified as Isak Aden, had exited and fled from the vehicle. Officers spotted Mr. Aden running southeast and into a small wooded area near Highway 13 and Silver Bell Road.
The woman who had called 911 and was the driver of the vehicle, had also fled from the vehicle and hid from Aden nearby. She was not injured.
Law enforcement began to establish a perimeter Aden fled the wooded area. Officers pursued Aden to a parking lot next to a business on Seneca Road in Eagan. Officers negotiated with Aden for almost four hours to drop the firearm and surrender. Officers provided medical aid at the scene and Aden was taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where he died.
A handgun and a cartridge casing were found next to Aden. No one else was injured during the incident.
Officers from Apple Valley, Bloomington, Burnsville, Eagan, Edina, Lakeville, the Minnesota State Patrol, Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, and South Metro SWAT Team assisted in the incident.
The BCA investigation into the incident is ongoing. When the investigation is completed, the BCA will present its findings to the Dakota County Attorney’s Office for review.
