Governor Walz visits vandalized mosque in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS – Governor of Minnesota ; Tim Walz visited a south Minneapolis mosque and Islamic center that was vandalized on Sunday, September 4th, 2022. Governor Walz and Lt.

Gov. Peggy Flanagan met with Muslim community leaders, community members and imams at the Towfiq Islam Center on 2400 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis, MN.

The Islamic center houses mosque, a weekend school for children, after school program for youth, educational and outreach services. Governor Walz and and Flanagan toured the damage and learned more about Towfiq Islamic Center established 24 years ago by the Oromo community.

Surveillance video caught a man breaking into the center late Sunday night. Leaders of Towfiq Islam Center said besides breaking windows and doors, the thief stole donations and damaged the Islamic Center. The damage is estimated to total more than $50,000.

Minneapolis police department investigators collected evidence at the scene and investigating this case. At this time, no arrest has been made.
