Local organizers begin campaign to recall Mike Freeman from office
Minneapolis — The campaign to recall Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman begins in earnest on Wednesday, June 3rd, as citizens in Hennepin County start collecting the 126,522 signatures required to initiate a recall election.
“State law gives Minnesotans the power to recall our elected officials when they fail our communities,” says Kathleen Cole, an organizer for the Recall Freeman campaign. “Mike Freeman violated his ethical duties, committed malfeasance, and made it harder to secure justice for George Floyd and his family. We must recall him now.”
On Wednesday, dozens of volunteers begin the work of collecting the 126,522 signatures required to trigger a recall election. Organizers are taking social distancing guidelines into consideration by setting up drive-thru signature collection sites, allowing Hennepin County residents to safely sign their petitions.
“Since the beginning of this crisis, Mike Freeman has mishandled the murder of George Floyd,” says Anthony Hernandez, a volunteer spokesperson for the Recall Freeman campaign. “Securing a conviction against a police officer is always difficult, and Mike Freeman has needlessly made it more difficult for justice to be served.”
On Wednesday morning, volunteers will begin collecting signatures at 38th and Chicago, the site where George Floyd was murdered. Signature collection will continue at First Universalist Church in South Minneapolis with the first drive-thru signature collection site.
