A car bomb went off in a hotel in Somalia’s port city of Kismayo where local elders and lawmakers were meeting, followed by gunfire, a Jubaland police officer said on Friday., killing at least 9 people and wounding more than 15 others, police said. The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab extremist group, which often targets Mogadishu, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Those killed include Hodan Nalayeh who is a Canadian based Somali media executive, marketing consultant, social activist and entrepreneur. The founder and President of the Cultural Integration Agency, Integration TV.
Hodan, her husband, a local journalist, a humanitarian worker, an elder and a businessman among at least 9 killed in Kismayo Al-Shabaab hotel attack.
A blast occurred in Hotel Asasey in the heart of Kismayu, followed by gunfire.
Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military operation spokesman, said the group was behind the attack and fighting was still going on.
