SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY: Minneapolis mosque giving back to neighbors hit hard by riots
In the face of the coronavirus pandemic and riots, one thing has not changed for one Minneapolis mosque: the focus on giving back. Abubakar Mosque and Islamic Center, Minneapolis’s largest mosque is giving out free food and essential items to residents, families and homeless people in need during the coronavirus pandemic and riots.
Abubakar mosque and Islamic Center at 2824 13th Ave S, Minneapolis IS located in a neighborhoods that are facing food desert after looting closes multiple stores. The stores and groceries Abubakar mosque neighboring residents use to shop at, such as Aldi, Cub, Target and many small markets are damaged by rioting. The neighborhoods that are close to the mosque have nearly become a food desert.
“We are one family and we love our neighbors. We know people can’t get food and basic essentials from the grocery stores, because of that we are here to support and offer free food, groceries and other essential items to our beloved neighbors.” Said Abdi Wajid, Abubakar mosque executive director.
Abubakar Mosque and Islamic Center offered free food and supplies at East Lake Street & 12th Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN, the last two weeks. The mosque received a large donation early this week and the mosque leadership, and volunteers plan to continue with the spirit of generosity and taking care of one another.
“Our neighborhood and community is beautiful, diverse and vibrant. We are committed to giving back and taking care of each other.” Said Mowlid Ali who is one of the Imams and Islamic scholars at Abubakar mosque.
